A simmering road rage dispute on a Missouri highway tragically escalated, culminating in the shooting death of 35-year-old Luke Joseph Sherman of O'Fallon on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. The fatal encounter began on westbound Interstate 64, where Sherman, driving a dark gray 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, and another motorist, Robert R. Farek, 48, in a silver 2007 Toyota Prius, engaged in a dangerous series of aggressive driving maneuvers.
According to court documents, Farek initiated the confrontation by passing Sherman's vehicle on the shoulder and then braking abruptly in front of him. Sherman retaliated, passing Farek's Prius and braking in a similar fashion. This dangerous back-and-forth continued for miles, ultimately leading both vehicles to exit at Winghaven Boulevard.
The conflict came to a deadly stop on the exit ramp. Sherman brought his Equinox to a sudden halt, exited the vehicle, and approached the driver's side of Farek's Prius. A passenger in Sherman's vehicle recounted hearing approximately four gunshots shortly after Sherman approached Farek's car. Investigators later found a Smith & Wesson M&P. 40-caliber handgun inside Farek's vehicle; no weapons were found on Sherman or in his car. After Sherman fell to the ground, Farek exited his Prius, appeared to place a hand on Sherman's chest, and then called 911. On the call, Farek claimed, "Someone just attacked me and I just shot him," and told an officer at the scene that Sherman had punched him through his open window. An autopsy would later reveal that Sherman had been shot only once, and the absence of gunpowder stippling indicated the shot was not fired at close range.
In the wake of the shooting, Robert R. Farek, a public works superintendent for the City of Ballwin, was taken into custody and has since been placed on administrative leave. On July 1, 2026, the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Farek with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. He is currently being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond. Luke Sherman was remembered by friends as a passionate "rock hound" and an avid outdoorsman who was dedicated to his family and had been making positive changes in his life. He worked as a supervisor for Archway Contractors and was a member of the Missouri Laborer Union Local #660. The case highlights the tragic and irreversible consequences of road rage, where a dispute between two drivers who did not know each other ended with one man dead and another facing murder charges. Prosecutors have stated that a claim of self-defense may be challenged by the fact that Farek was an initiator of the aggressive driving that led to the fatal confrontation.
