In the summer of 2018, a young man’s life was cut short in a burst of violence that echoed through a St. Louis neighborhood. Eighteen-year-old Tyrell Spivey, a resident of the 5100 block of Minerva, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds just a block from his home, in the 5200 block of the same street. The call came in to police on a Monday, and upon their arrival, they found a scene of grim familiarity.
Spivey was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the severity of his injuries proved to be too much, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly focused on a man who lived in the very same neighborhood where the fatal shots were fired. Charles Fields, a 22-year-old who resided on the 5200 block of Minerva, was identified as the suspect in Spivey’s death. Within a week of Tyrell Spivey’s death, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office brought formal charges against Charles Fields.
