In the early morning hours of July 6, 2026, a family celebration in the south suburban community of Harvey, Illinois, turned into a scene of tragedy. Keshawn Lewis-Hunt, a 20-year-old former football standout, was attending a birthday party for his cousin at his grandmother's home. The gathering took a violent turn when a fight broke out between two women. Known for his calm demeanor and desire to de-escalate conflict, Lewis-Hunt stepped in to intervene. It was in this moment of attempting to restore peace that gunfire erupted, and he was struck by multiple bullets.
Police were called to the residence in the 16000 block of Ashland Avenue just after 1:15 a.m. regarding a person shot. Upon arrival, they discovered Lewis-Hunt with an apparent gunshot wound and immediately began administering CPR and other life-saving measures. He was then rushed to UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:54 a.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed his death as a homicide resulting from multiple gunshot wounds. Two other men, including Lewis-Hunt's cousin, were also injured during the incident and transported themselves to the same hospital for treatment.
