Taijean, who was affectionately known as "TaeMoe," was a promising athlete, wearing jersey number 4 for the Thornton Township High School varsity football team. He was just 15 days away from his 18th birthday and had plans to donate a kidney to his father. The shooting was part of a deadly confrontation that stemmed from a social media feud between Taijean and several others.
On the night of the incident, Taijean and another young man, 18-year-old Bryan Harris, were involved in a shootout at the convenience store. The confrontation began with a verbal exchange inside the store, which escalated when the individuals involved attempted to leave. They were met with gunfire from a dark-colored vehicle outside. Unbeknownst to the assailants, one of the individuals inside the store also had a gun and returned fire. Both Taijean and Bryan were fatally shot during the exchange.
The Harvey Police Department, along with Illinois State Police, launched an extensive manhunt for the suspects, who were last seen driving a black Jeep Grand Cherokee. The pursuit extended into downtown Chicago but was eventually aborted for safety reasons. Investigators believe the shooting was connected to an ongoing social media dispute, which had already resulted in three other shootings in Harvey that weekend. The police urged parents to monitor their children's social media activity closely, as it was believed that the individuals involved were using social media to disclose their locations and engage in criminal activities.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the suspects remained at large.
