On the evening of April 29, 2025, tragedy struck in Harvey, Illinois, when 17-year-old Amari M. Binion was fatally shot near 147th Street and Perry Avenue. Binion, a young Black male, had just exited the EZ Pawn shop at 468 E. 147th Street shortly after 5 p.m. when he encountered a group standing in the driveway of a nearby McDonald's on Sibley Boulevard. According to authorities, an exchange of gunfire occurred between Binion and the group, resulting in Binion being struck in the midsection. Despite his injuries, he attempted to flee south on Perry Avenue but collapsed in neighboring South Holland. Emergency responders transported him to Ingalls Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:38 p.m.
The following day, Harvey police announced that they had arrested a suspect in South Holland without incident. While the suspect's identity has not been disclosed, officials confirmed that multiple crime scenes were processed by Harvey detectives and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigations Unit. As of now, charges against the suspect are still pending, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward and contact the Harvey Police Department. The community remains shaken by the loss of Binion, a young Black male whose life was cut short in a violent encounter.
