In the late morning of Friday, May 29, 2026, the life of 40-year-old Giavonathan Butler was tragically cut short in a room at the Metro Inn and Suites on Golfair Boulevard in Jacksonville, Florida. Butler, a Black male, was discovered by officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office just before noon, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the arrival of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial investigation pointed to a violent confrontation, with detectives from the Homicide Unit immediately beginning the task of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
The investigation quickly focused on a verbal dispute that had occurred earlier in the day between Butler and another individual. According to a witness, Butler had told a man to move away from his motel room door, which reportedly angered the man. This man, later identified as 25-year-old Alfred Jones III, allegedly expressed to the witness that he was tired of people "trying" him. Investigators learned that Jones, who was known by the nickname "YB," had been released from prison less than two months prior, on April 7, 2026, after being convicted in March 2022 for burglary with assault or battery and possession of cocaine. This prior felony conviction made it illegal for him to possess a firearm.
Evidence gathered from surveillance footage, witness interviews, and the crime scene itself, where two 9mm shell casings were recovered, pointed to Jones as one of the gunmen. A witness reported that Jones and an unidentified male entered Butler's room before Jones was seen fleeing through a back door and jumping a fence. While canvassing the area of Jones's escape route, detectives discovered a magazine containing six live 9mm rounds, which matched the casings found near Butler's body. Based on the evidence, an arrest warrant was issued for Jones on Sunday, May 31, 2026. Later that same day, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office SWAT team located and apprehended Jones at his residence on Forest Boulevard, taking him into custody without incident. Jones was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and was held without bond. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to search for the second suspect who was with Jones at the time of the shooting.
