Amarion Mitchell, 22, a Black/African American male from Jacksonville, was shot on May 26, 2025, outside his apartment at the Westwood Apartments on Lane Avenue South in the city’s Westside/Normandy Village area. Officers found him with multiple gunshot wounds; Jacksonville Fire and Rescue rushed him to a hospital in critical condition, and he died several days later. He had just turned 22 earlier that month.
Detectives interviewed people who may have been involved and reviewed evidence from the scene. Within a week, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office identified a suspect: 22-year-old Muhammad Thomas. According to police and local reporting, Thomas was already being held in the Duval County jail on an unrelated charge when an arrest warrant was issued in the killing of Amarion Mitchell; he was charged with murder and remained jailed as of early June 2025. Authorities have not publicly released a motive.
