A dispute in a construction zone on a Southern California highway escalated into a fatal shooting, leaving a 52-year-old man dead. The incident, which unfolded on the afternoon of June 2, 2026, in Mountain Center, began when Gabriel Rodriguez, a tow truck driver from Midway City, was involved in a series of hit-and-run collisions. Driving his Ram 5500 tow truck eastbound on Highway 74, Rodriguez struck multiple vehicles before continuing on his way.
His journey came to a halt when he reached an active construction zone near Palm Canyon Drive, where traffic was being managed in a single lane for approximately 30 vehicles.
Ignoring the directions of the traffic control workers, Rodriguez drove his tow truck up to the pilot car that was guiding the line of vehicles through the construction area. He then exited his truck, armed with a shotgun. According to investigators, he fired several warning shots into the air before turning his weapon on the driver of the pilot car.
