In the early hours of a Thursday morning in Oklahoma City, a dispute between two men escalated into a fatal encounter, leaving one man dead and the other facing a murder charge. On March 26, 2026, just before 8:30 a.m., police were dispatched to the area of NE 11th Street and Missouri Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered 29-year-old Jerel Smith suffering from gunshot wounds.
Smith was urgently transported to a local hospital where he was listed in
critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His death marked the 15th homicide in Oklahoma City for the year 2026. Investigators quickly determined that Smith had been involved in an altercation with another individual prior to the shooting.
The investigation led police to 20-year-old August Sobreira Freeland Moeckel. After being located and interviewed by detectives, Moeckel was taken into custody. He was subsequently booked into jail on a complaint of second-degree murder in connection with Jerel Smith's death.
