College student goes for walk and is found dead in cornfield
In August of 1985, Kristin O'Connell, a 20-year-old female college student from Minnesota, traveled to the small town of Ovid, New York, to visit a young man she had met during spring break in Florida. She arrived on August 12th for what should have been a pleasant visit before resuming her studies. However, the trip took a dark turn. On August 14th, Kristin made a phone call to her mother, sounding upset and expressing her intention to cut the trip short and return home the following day.
That same evening, she was at a gathering at the mobile home of the friend she was visiting. Sometime around 11:00 or 11:30 p.m., she reportedly left the trailer to go for a walk by herself. She was last seen walking along County Road 139, barefoot and without her purse. Witnesses later reported seeing her walking alone, and some claimed to have seen a car pull up beside her, while others saw two men following her at a distance. A loud scream was reportedly heard by several people in the area shortly after she was last seen. When she failed to return, she was reported missing the following day by the friend she was visiting, approximately 13 hours after she had left for her walk.
A search was initiated, and on August 16, 1985, Kristin O'Connell's naked body was discovered in a nearby cornfield, less than a quarter-mile from where she was staying. An autopsy revealed she had been brutally murdered, having sustained multiple stab wounds to her chest, and her throat had been slit. Despite the violent nature of the attack, the coroner found no evidence of sexual assault, and tests showed there was no alcohol in her system.
For decades, the investigation into Kristin O'Connell's murder has continued, but no arrests have ever been made, and the case remains unsolved. New York State Police have pursued over 2,000 leads throughout the years to no avail. The man Kristin was visiting and others present at the trailer on the night of her disappearance were questioned and subsequently cleared by investigators. Law enforcement has long theorized that her death was a random act of violence, a crime of opportunity committed by a stranger. However, rumors have persisted within the small community of Ovid, with some residents believing that the truth of what happened to Kristin is known by locals who have remained silent. Despite the passage of time and the numerous appeals for information, her killer has never been brought to justice.
