In the late summer of 2025, a beloved 69-year-old grandmother, Robin Wright, became an innocent victim of senseless violence in her East Harlem neighborhood. On the afternoon of August 27th, Wright, who used a walker to get around, was enjoying a walk with her best friend, Juanita Arnold, after picking up lunch from a favorite local Chinese restaurant.
As they made their way near the corner of East 110th Street and Madison Avenue, the day was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
The two friends were caught in the crossfire of a shootout that erupted down the street. According to police, the incident began when a man was robbed by two individuals. The victim of the robbery then pursued his assailants, and a gun battle ensued between them. A stray bullet from this exchange struck Wright in the face. Her friend, Juanita Arnold, recalled the horrific final moments, stating that Wright's last word was a simple 'Yeah' after being asked if she had been shot. Arnold could only watch as her friend collapsed to the ground. Emergency services rushed Wright to a nearby hospital, but her injuries were too severe, and she was pronounced dead.
The brazen daylight shooting left the East Harlem community in a state of shock and mourning. Wright was described by those who knew her as a kind and caring soul, a fixture in the neighborhood who always had a warm greeting for everyone. In the days following her tragic death, makeshift memorials with flowers and candles grew at the site of the shooting as friends, family, and neighbors gathered to remember a woman who was senselessly taken from them. The image of her walker left standing on the sidewalk became a poignant symbol of the innocent life lost.
The New York Police Department immediately launched an intensive investigation, vowing to bring those responsible to justice. Investigators canvassed the area for witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage, which reportedly captured a man in a black hoodie firing a rapid succession of shots. Within days, a breakthrough was made in the case with the arrest of 18-year-old Faisil McCants. Authorities alleged that McCants and two accomplices had robbed a drug dealer of backpacks filled with marijuana. As the robbery victim chased and fired at them, McCants is said to have fired approximately 15 rounds from a machine gun, one of which fatally struck Robin Wright. McCants is now facing federal charges, including robbery and using a machine gun in a violent crime, as well as murder charges from the NYPD.
