In the small community of Mound Bayou, Mississippi, the life of 15-year-old Alexis Walker, a Black female, was tragically cut short on the evening of Saturday, April 4, 2026. The teenager fell victim to a fatal shooting that also resulted in life-threatening injuries to another 15-year-old. The incident unfolded around 9:21 p.m. when deputies from the Bolivar County Sheriff's Office were called to the vicinity of Old Highway 61 and Luke Road after receiving reports of a gunshot victim. Upon their arrival, law enforcement discovered a black Honda Accord with its doors open, parked in the southbound lane. Inside the vehicle, they found Alexis Walker, who had already succumbed to her injuries.
While Alexis was discovered on the highway, the investigation determined that the actual shooting had taken place at a residence located at 202 Green Avenue, not far from the Mound Bayou Police Department. In the days following the tragic event, a collaborative investigation involving the Bolivar County Sheriff's Office, the Mound Bayou Police Department, and the North Side Consolidated School District Police Department led to the apprehension of two juvenile suspects. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Sixteen-year-old Joei Taylor of Mound Bayou was taken into custody and has been charged with murder and three counts of aggravated assault. A second teenager, 17-year-old Travis Scott Jr., also from Mound Bayou, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact. Both individuals were being held at the Bolivar County Regional Facility as they awaited their initial court appearances. The Bolivar County Sheriff's Office extended its condolences to the family of Alexis Walker and all those affected by this tragedy. In response to the violence, the mayor of Mound Bayou, Leighton Aldridge, urged for unity and peace within the shaken community. A Peace Walk and Prayer was organized to show public unity and to take a step toward reducing gun violence. Services for Alexis were scheduled for Saturday, April 25, at Northside High School, with burial to follow at McLaurin Memorial Gardens in Clarksdale.
