In the city of Greenville, Mississippi, a dedicated public servant's life was tragically cut short in the line of duty. Myiesha Stewart, a 30-year-old Black female detective with the Greenville Police Department, was killed on the evening of Tuesday, October 11, 2022. She was responding to a report of a shooting near the intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and Mississippi Highway 1 when she was fatally wounded. Stewart, a Greenville native and a graduate of the local high school, had majored in criminal justice at Delta State University. She left behind a young son.
On that Tuesday evening, events began to unfold at the intersection of Reed and Rebecca Streets. When Detective Stewart arrived at the scene of the reported shooting, the situation escalated into what was described as a 'big shootout.' Before Stewart was killed, the suspect had already shot a man in the head and a woman in the foot. Both the suspect and the male victim were subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Jackson for treatment. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to handle the investigation, a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in the state.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as 29-year-old Kamarcus Charles of Greenville. After being released from the hospital, Charles was charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Detective Myiesha Stewart. An initial court appearance was held on October 20, 2022, where he was denied bond. Following the legal process, Kamarcus Charles was found guilty of capital murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the killing of Detective Stewart.
