In the early evening of Saturday, April 11, 2026, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the 3500 block of 22nd Street, Southeast, Washington, D.C., leaving a young man dead and two others wounded. The deceased was identified as 18-year-old Dereon Womack of Northeast, D.C. The incident, which is now the subject of a homicide investigation, unfolded at approximately 6:29 p.m.
When officers from the Seventh District arrived at the scene, they discovered a grim tableau.
Dereon Womack was found in a driveway at the rear of a location, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response and lifesaving efforts by D.C. Fire and EMS personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The violence of the evening was not confined to that single spot. A second adult male was located inside a vehicle, also with gunshot wounds. A third victim was found a short distance away at the intersection of 23rd Street and Savannah Street, Southeast, also suffering from gunshot injuries. Both surviving victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the triple shooting and has not yet identified a suspect or a motive for the attack. It remains unclear what led to the shooting or if the victims were specifically targeted. Authorities have released a description of a vehicle of interest, a dark-colored sedan, which was last seen driving down Southern Avenue. In an effort to generate leads, the police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this homicide. The investigation is ongoing as the community mourns the loss of a young life to gun violence.
