In the late hours of a Saturday night in Kansas City, Kansas, the Shawnee Heights neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. On April 11, 2026, police were dispatched to the 600 block of Ridgeview Avenue around 11:45 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered 35-year-old Asael Linares outside his home, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically, his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a person of interest. Within a few days, the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office announced that charges had been filed in connection with Linares's death. An 18-year-old man named Martin Daniel Lopez was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder for his alleged role in the fatal shooting.
While an arrest has been made, the circumstances that led to the violent encounter outside of Linares's home remain unclear as investigators have not yet released a motive for the shooting. Lopez is currently being held in the Wyandotte County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
