In the early hours of April 14, 2026, a tragedy unfolded at a BP gas station on Metropolitan Parkway in southwest Atlanta, cutting short the life of 17-year-old Rashawn Mackey. The teenager was working, reportedly as a food delivery driver, when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when police were called to the scene and found Mackey inside the gas station with a gunshot wound to his chest.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, Mackey was with a group of people picking up food orders when he entered the gas station. Inside, he encountered a man who was reportedly upset about something unrelated to the teen. The situation escalated, leading to the man firing a couple of shots, one of which struck and killed Mackey. Authorities believe the encounter was random and that Mackey and the shooter did not know each other. A witness at the gas pumps reported hearing two gunshots and then seeing a man in a black hoodie run from the store and toward a nearby McDonald's.
In the immediate aftermath, the suspect, who fled the scene on foot, had not been identified, and no arrests had been made. Atlanta Police were in the process of reviewing surveillance footage from the gas station in an effort to identify the person responsible for Rashawn Mackey's death. K-9 units were brought to the scene and reportedly tracked a scent to a nearby apartment complex, where investigators were seen gathering potential evidence. The investigation into the senseless killing remains ongoing.
