Deonta Evans, a 19-year-old male, was riding his bicycle on the afternoon of January 13th, just a block away from his home. He had just been to a store to buy a Powerball ticket for his mother. As he rode in front of J.E. Brown Middle School, shots rang out, and Deonta was struck multiple times.
The brazen daylight shooting prompted a temporary lockdown of the school, which was still in session.
Deonta was remembered by loved ones as a 'fine kid' who was not involved in violence. He had aspirations of pursuing a music career and was making plans to enroll in a Job Corps training program to better his future. His family was left heartbroken and searching for answers, unable to comprehend why someone would target him. The assailant did not take any of Deonta's belongings, deepening the mystery surrounding the motive for the attack.
In the days following the shooting, the Atlanta Police Department released a surveillance video to the public. The footage showed a man in jeans and a sweatshirt running from the area shortly after the gunshots were fired. While police were not ready to definitively label him as the suspect, his appearance matched the description of the shooter. Authorities also received a tip that the man seen fleeing might be known in the Vine City neighborhood by the name 'Mario'. A $2,000 reward was offered for any information that could lead to an arrest.
Despite the video evidence and the circulation of the potential suspect's nickname, the investigation into Deonta Evans's murder grew cold. No arrests have ever been made in connection with his death. The identity of the man known as 'Mario' remains unknown, and the case is now considered one of Atlanta's unsolved homicides from 2016.
