In the summer of 2024, on the 10th of July, the life of 16-year-old Maurice Weems was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. The male teenager was found with multiple gunshot wounds at the Reserve at Hollywood Road apartments in northwest Atlanta. The day of his death, Maurice had reached out to his paternal grandmother for a ride, a call that would later haunt her with
unbearable regret as she was at work and unable to pick him up. For Maurice, the apartment complex on Hollywood Road was a place of deep-seated trauma; it was in this same complex, when he was just nine years old, that he had discovered the body of his maternal grandmother who had been strangled to death.
In the wake of the shooting, the Atlanta Police Department began an investigation into the teen's death. While the motive for the shooting remained unclear, investigators released surveillance footage showing three individuals they identified as suspects. The community was urged to come forward with any information that could lead to an arrest in the case.
