In the pre-dawn hours of a Wednesday morning in Atlanta, Georgia, the life of George Zachary Andrews, a 38-year-old Black / African American man, was brought to an abrupt and violent end. On November 1, 2023, at approximately 4:11 a.m., police responded to a call of a person shot at a Texaco gas station in the Lakewood Heights neighborhood. Upon arrival at the station located in the 1600 block of Lakewood Avenue SE, officers discovered Andrews suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a chaotic series of events that unfolded outside the gas station's convenience store. Surveillance footage captured what appeared to begin as a dispute between two men over a black backpack. The argument escalated into a physical struggle, followed by the sound of gunshots. The situation intensified when a third individual arrived in a black car, exited the vehicle, and began to load a firearm. In response, another man who had been inside the store ran out to his own car to retrieve a semi-automatic weapon. The fatal shots that struck George Zachary Andrews were fired moments later, outside the gas station.
While some witnesses at the scene suggested the confrontation may have been related to a drug transaction that had gone awry, authorities have not officially confirmed a motive for the killing. The area where the shooting occurred has been noted as a location with a history of violent crime. In the aftermath of the shooting, family members identified Andrews as the victim. As of the latest available reports, the Atlanta Police Department's investigation is still active and ongoing. No arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
