In the early morning hours of March 26, 2026, a dispute in a northeast Oklahoma City neighborhood escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 29-year-old Jerel Smith. The Black male became the city's 15th homicide victim of the year following the altercation near Northeast 11th Street and Missouri Avenue.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene just before 8:30 a.m. in response to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered Jerel Smith with gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect, 20-year-old August Sobreira Freeland Moeckel, who they determined had been involved in the altercation with Smith that preceded the fatal shooting. Later that day, authorities located Moeckel, and after an interview with detectives, he was arrested and booked into jail. He faces a complaint of second-degree murder for his alleged role in Smith's death.
In the wake of his death, Jerel Smith's family expressed their profound grief. Described as a loving father, his family initiated a fundraising campaign to transport his body to California for a proper burial, seeking to honor his memory amidst their sudden and tragic loss.
