David Gary Martin Jr., a 20-year-old male from Detroit, was killed on the night of March 30, 2026, in a burst of gunfire on the city’s west side. According to prosecutors, the violence unfolded near Margareta Street and Prest Street at about 9:59 p.m., when multiple people allegedly opened fire on his vehicle. Wounded and trying to escape, Martin drove away from the scene but lost control, and his vehicle slammed into a house on Sussex Street.
Police found him still in the driver’s seat, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. Public obituary information identifies his birth date as May 17, 2005, underscoring how young he was when his life ended in that final, chaotic drive away from danger.
In the days that followed, the case moved quickly into the courts. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced charges against three Detroit teenagers in connection with Martin’s killing: Keyonte Johnson, 17, Taiwan Nathaniel Jody Robinson, 18, and Tadario Thomas Derwin Sims, 18. Prosecutors allege that the three produced handguns and fired at Martin’s car before he crashed while attempting to flee. Johnson and Sims were charged with premeditated first-degree murder, felony-firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon. Robinson was charged with premeditated first-degree murder, felony-firearm, and third-degree fleeing. Authorities said all three were arraigned in 36th District Court and remanded to jail, with a probable cause conference scheduled for April 13, 2026, and a preliminary examination set for April 20, 2026. At this stage, the charges remain allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
