On the evening of October 6, 2011, the life of Brian Richard 'Moe' Motyka, a 37-year-old male, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Detroit, Michigan. A well-known and beloved figure in the local music scene, Motyka was the unintended victim of a drive-by shooting at approximately 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Holbrook and Brush streets.
Earlier that night, Motyka had left his residence in Hamtramck, en route to a performance at the Harbor House.
He made a stop at a friend's house to drop off some apples and candles. After leaving the home and getting into his vehicle, a man approached the passenger side and asked for a ride. As this individual began to enter the car, another vehicle pulled alongside and unleashed a spray of bullets from a semi-automatic weapon into the driver's side where Motyka sat. He was killed instantly. The passenger managed to escape with only graze wounds.
Witnesses and reports have consistently stated that Motyka was an innocent bystander, not the intended target of the shooting. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the Detroit music community, where he was revered as a talented rock and blues musician. He was known for his soulful tenor vocals and his skills on the guitar and piano. Beyond his musical talents, Motyka was remembered for his compassionate and loving nature, often volunteering with the Salvation Army Gospel Choir and The Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
In the wake of the tragedy, hundreds gathered to pay their respects at his funeral, a testament to the many lives he had touched. Despite the public outcry and the clear circumstances of his death, the case remains unsolved. To date, there has been no information released to the public regarding any suspects or arrests in connection with the murder of Brian Motyka, leaving a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community he served.
