In the afternoon hours of May 12, 2014, a tragic event unfolded in Detroit, Michigan, that cut short the life of Troy Sowell-Benson. An African-American male, Sowell-Benson, who was also known by the nickname 'TJ,' was just 28 years old at the time of his death, having celebrated his birthday only ten days prior. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. shortly after he had parked his vehicle at the Top of the Drive apartments, situated at 12880 W. Outer Drive, near Schoolcraft.
