In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Detroit, a routine stop at a gas station turned into a scene of deadly violence that claimed the life of Ahsan Alwatan, a 26-year-old Iraqi immigrant. The incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. on July 17, 2016, at a Fuel Depot on West Warren Avenue. Alwatan was behind the wheel of his silver Dodge Ram, with a friend in the passenger seat, when a black Cadillac Escalade pulled up alongside them.
An argument broke out between the occupants of the two vehicles. The verbal confrontation quickly escalated when someone in the Escalade opened fire. Alwatan was struck multiple times in the head. In a final effort to escape the hail of bullets, he attempted to drive away, but his truck crashed into a column at another Fuel Depot across the street. Ahsan Alwatan died at the scene from his injuries. His 26-year-old passenger sustained a foot injury during the crash and was hospitalized in stable condition.
Immediately following the shooting, the black Cadillac Escalade fled the scene, heading south on the Southfield Freeway before exiting onto Ford Road and continuing westbound into Dearborn. A witness to the shooting bravely attempted to follow the suspects' vehicle and managed to get a partial license plate number. However, the gunman in the Escalade began firing at the witness, forcing them to abandon the pursuit for their own safety.
Despite the witness's efforts and an ongoing police investigation, the individuals responsible for the death of Ahsan Alwatan have never been publicly identified or apprehended. The motive for the argument that led to the fatal shooting remains unclear, and it is not known if the victims had any prior connection to their attackers. The case has left a grieving family and community with many unanswered questions and a sense of unresolved justice for the husband and father who was taken from them so violently.
