Gage W. Schmaltz, a 19-year-old male, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run crash on a Saturday evening in Macomb County, Michigan. He was riding his 2007 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on 26 Mile Road when a westbound 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by a 29-year-old man from New Baltimore, turned left into a private driveway, striking Schmaltz's motorcycle. The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox fled the scene of the accident.
Emergency responders arrived to find Schmaltz deceased at the scene of the crash. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office investigated the incident and was able to locate the suspect vehicle at a residence in New Baltimore. The driver was subsequently arrested and taken into custody.
The suspect was charged with operating while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony, and leaving the scene of an accident causing death, a 5-year felony. He was arraigned in the 42-1 District Court in Romeo and his bond was set at $750,000. The case is pending further legal proceedings.
