LaJuan Swopes was a 13-year-old boy who, by many accounts, had a keen sense of style and a strong work ethic. He ran a lawn care business with his brothers and cousins, diligently working to earn money for his own clothes. His life, however, was tragically cut short on the evening of March 31, 2026, in Ferguson, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. LaJuan, an eighth-grader at Brittany Woods Middle School, was attending a high school track meet at the STEAM Academy at McCluer South-Berkeley High
School. He was there to cheer on friends and family, with an eye on possibly joining the track team himself when he got to high school.
As the track meet concluded, an altercation began to brew in the school's parking lot. Some teenagers squared off, seemingly ready to fight, while others took out their phones to record the escalating tensions. Before coaches could intervene, the situation turned deadly when a gun was drawn and shots were fired. LaJuan was struck by the gunfire, as was another teenager, a 15-year-old who was left in critical condition. LaJuan was rushed to the hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
In the immediate aftermath, police apprehended a suspect just a block away from the scene and recovered a handgun. The individual taken into custody was also a 13-year-old boy. He was subsequently charged in family court with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. The young suspect appeared in court from a juvenile detention center and was ordered to remain in custody. Authorities have stated that they are not seeking any other suspects in the shooting. The motive behind the tragic incident is still under investigation. A future hearing will determine if the accused will be tried as an adult.
The death of LaJuan has been a devastating blow to his family, who had already endured significant hardship. His mother is now left to raise her four remaining sons alone, having lost their father to gun violence in 2020. The family had also lost all of their belongings in a house fire the previous year. In the face of this unimaginable loss, LaJuan's mother has expressed a desire to forgive the boy accused of taking her son's life, referring to him as a "baby" due to his young age. The community has responded with grief and calls for an end to youth violence, with local leaders and organizations planning forums to address the issue with parents and young people.
