On the afternoon of December 15, 2022, a violent series of events unfolded in the Patch neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, resulting in the loss of life on the 7900 block of South Broadway. Police were summoned to the scene shortly before 5:00 p.m., responding to reports of a shooting that had drawn a large crowd near St. Louis Square Park. Upon arrival, officers discovered a lifeless body on the sidewalk.
The victim was identified as 32-year-old Hispanic male Mario Martinez, who had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
Witnesses and investigators later piece together the chaotic moments leading up to the homicide. The disturbance reportedly began in the nearby park, where a man was seen brandishing a firearm and waving it at people. The confrontation spilled out from the park onto South Broadway, where the gunman targeted Martinez. During the encounter, the assailant fired his weapon, striking Martinez and killing him at the scene.
A 39-year-old bystander attempted to intervene after witnessing the shooting, courageously grappling with the gunman over the weapon. During the struggle, the suspect struck the witness in the eye with the firearm before fleeing the scene. The gunman then forced his way into a nearby apartment building. Inside, he encountered a 19-year-old resident who, fearing for his life, drew a weapon and fired at the intruder.
The sequence of violence ended with the death of the suspect inside the apartment. Authorities identified the shooter responsible for Martinez's death as 23-year-old Robert Liska of Lemay. Because Liska died from the gunshot wounds sustained during the home invasion, no arrests were made in connection with the murder of Martinez. Detectives closed the case by documenting the timeline and witness accounts, which corroborated the resident's claim of self-defense.
