Melissa Jane Shoop, a 31-year-old woman from Maumee, Ohio, tragically passed away on October 21, 2019. Melissa was born on July 17, 1988, and was a loving mother to her two daughters, Lily and Rose. She was known for her contagious smile and can-do spirit, and she enjoyed spending time with her friends and being around children. Melissa graduated from Maumee High School in 2006 and later attended Owens Community College.
Melissa's death was the result of a murder-suicide committed by her
ex-boyfriend, John Belew. Melissa had been trying to end a lengthy and volatile relationship with Belew, who had a history of domestic violence. Despite having a protection order against him, Belew managed to sneak around the side of the residence and fatally shot Melissa as she sat outside with friends. Melissa was shot three times, twice in the legs and once in the head. Belew then turned the gun on himself.
The incident occurred at Melissa's mother's house, where Melissa's two daughters and another child were asleep inside at the time. Melissa's mother, Melanie Shoop, has since been raising Melissa's daughters and advocating against domestic violence. The community has come together to remember Melissa and support her family, with efforts to combat domestic violence and honor Melissa's legacy.
Melissa's tragic death has sparked a call to action to help prevent domestic violence and support victims. Her family is working to establish a non-profit organization called Melissa's Garden of Hope Against Domestic Violence to educate and assist victims. Melissa's story serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and supporting those affected by it.
