Laila Johnson, a 2-year-old girl from Wickliffe, Ohio, tragically died on April 20, 2018, from an accidental gunshot wound. She was staying at a hotel with her mother and siblings when the incident occurred. Her mother, who had a valid concealed carry permit, accidentally dropped her gun, causing it to discharge and strike Laila in the chest. The bullet went through a mattress before hitting her. Despite immediate medical attention, Laila was pronounced dead at Lake West Hospital.
The police investigation determined that the shooting was accidental. The mother was handling the gun when it went off, and Laila unknowingly moved into the line of fire. The mother was distraught and repeatedly told the 911 operator, "She's gone. My baby's gone," during the call. The Lake County Crime Lab and the prosecutor's office reviewed the case to decide if any charges would be filed, but ultimately, no charges were brought against the mother.
