In what was supposed to be a prearranged sale of marijuana, 30-year-old Deven Mays was fatally shot in a robbery that went wrong in northwest Las Vegas on the evening of March 30, 2026. The tragic event unfolded at an apartment complex near West Ann Road and Interstate 11, leaving his wife injured and their family shattered.
Mays, a local tattoo artist and father of six, had reportedly arranged the transaction through Instagram to sell a quarter-pound of marijuana.
He was accompanied by his wife, Brianna Benevedes, and their 3-year-old son when they met the supposed buyer. After the buyer, identified as 18-year-old Miles Spivey, entered their vehicle, he allegedly brandished a gun and demanded the drugs. Almost simultaneously, a second man approached the car, also armed.
Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing a male voice demanding, "Give all of that," before Mays attempted to drive away. As he tried to flee, multiple shots were fired into the vehicle. Mays was struck in the chest, and his wife was wounded in the leg; their young son, who was in a car seat, was physically unharmed. After being shot, Mays told his wife, "I love you guys, but I was shot," before succumbing to his injuries at the scene.
In the days following the shooting, Spivey's attorney contacted the police, and Spivey turned himself in. He now faces charges of murder, robbery, and child abuse. A second suspect, Daequan McGee, was identified from surveillance footage by a relative and also faces the same charges. At the time of the incident, McGee was on juvenile parole for a prior armed carjacking in which Spivey was a co-defendant, and there is an active warrant for his arrest in connection with Mays's death.
