In the West Oak Lane neighborhood of Philadelphia, a 13-year-old boy's life was cut short on the evening of Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Amir Aker was with a friend near a basketball court behind some houses on the 7100 block of North 19th Street when gunfire erupted at approximately 8:45 p.m. An altercation involving a number of people is believed to have escalated to the shooting. Amir was struck multiple times in the back and shoulder.
He was rushed to Jefferson Einstein Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after, at around 9:20 p.m. A 14-year-old boy who was with Amir was also shot multiple times and was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
Amir was a student at General Louis Wagner Middle School, where he was described as a "beloved student" who was "very popular" and had a passion for sports. His family remembered him as a warm and loyal eighth-grader with hopes for the future. In the wake of his death, the School District of Philadelphia made support services available to students, and his grandparents publicly mourned their loss. A memorial tree is planned to be planted in his honor in the Allegheny National Forest as part of the Trees For Peace Memorial.
The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating the shooting. At the scene, investigators recovered between 15 and 20 shell casings and car parts, leading them to believe the shooter or shooters may have fled in a vehicle. While police have not yet determined a motive, there were rumors that the shooting may have stemmed from a conflict between rival groups. As of the days immediately following the incident, no arrests had been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
