A native of Bucaramanga, Colombia, the young man was traveling as a passenger in a vehicle when the attack occurred. The incident unfolded at approximately 10:30 p.m. in the 6100 block of North Kimball Avenue, near Glenlake Avenue.
As the vehicle Sergio was in proceeded down the street, a red car pulled alongside it.
Without warning, an occupant of the red vehicle opened fire, striking the teenager in the face and torso. The sudden violence of the drive-by shooting left him with critical injuries. He was rushed to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston for emergency medical care. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Sergio Agon Mejia succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The event sent shockwaves through the local Colombian community, who mourned the loss of a young life to the city's persistent gun violence.
