In the late afternoon of Wednesday, February 25, 2026, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a park in the Little Woods neighborhood of New Orleans East. When police were called to the scene near the 8500 block of Fordham Court around 4:00 p.m., they discovered the body of 17-year-old Harlem Virgil. The young man had sustained at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
Harlem, also known by the spelling Harlym, was a promising student at N.O. Science and Mathematics High School, where he was consistently on the honor roll and participated in various leadership roles.
The New Orleans Police Department began an immediate investigation into the homicide. Their efforts quickly led them to a person of interest, and shortly after the shooting, they detained an 18-year-old male. This individual was later identified as Megill Harris. Through their investigation, detectives were able to positively identify Harris as the perpetrator in the shooting death of Harlem Virgil.
Following the identification, an arrest warrant was issued for Megill Harris. He was taken into custody without incident and has been booked on a charge of second-degree murder. While an arrest has been made, authorities have not yet released any information regarding a possible motive for the shooting. The investigation is considered ongoing, and officials have asked that anyone with additional information come forward to assist homicide detectives. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office officially identified Harlem Virgil as the victim after an autopsy and notification of his family.
