Georgann Hawkins, an 18-year-old Caucasian female, was a student at the University of Washington. In the early morning hours of June 11, 1974, she vanished from a well-lit alley behind her sorority house. She was on her way back from her boyfriend's fraternity house, which was only a short distance away. After attending a party with a sorority sister, Hawkins went to her boyfriend's residence to say goodnight and pick up some notes for an upcoming Spanish final.
She left his fraternity house around 12:30 a.m. and was last seen by a friend who spoke to her from a second-story window overlooking the alley. She never made it back to her sorority house.
Her disappearance prompted an immediate police investigation as it was uncharacteristic of the responsible and high-achieving student. As days turned into weeks with no sign of Hawkins, her family and friends grew increasingly concerned. The case remained cold for years, one of several unsolved disappearances of young women in the Pacific Northwest at the time, leaving her loved ones with no answers about her fate.
It was not until shortly before his execution in 1989 that serial killer Ted Bundy confessed to the abduction and murder of Georgann Hawkins. He provided a detailed account of how he lured her to his car by feigning an injury and asking for her help carrying his briefcase. Once she was near his vehicle, he struck her with a crowbar, rendering her unconscious, and forced her into his car. Bundy claimed that when she regained consciousness and began to talk incoherently about her Spanish exam, he struck her again. He then drove her to a secluded area near Lake Sammamish, where he strangled her to death.
Bundy further stated that he later returned to the site and decapitated her, burying her head in a separate location. He claimed that some of her partial skeletal remains were discovered on September 6, 1974, near Issaquah, alongside the remains of two other victims. However, these specific remains were never definitively identified as belonging to Georgann Hawkins, and some reports suggest they may have been accidentally cremated. Despite his detailed confession, because he was executed shortly after, Bundy was never formally charged with or tried for the murder of Georgann Hawkins. She is still officially listed as a missing person.
