On a tragic Saturday morning, March 25, 2006, the life of 14-year-old Melissa Moore was cut short in a senseless act of violence in Seattle, Washington. The young girl, described by her family as strong-minded, loving, and generous, had spent the night out with older friends, attending a rave in the city. This was a relatively new activity for Melissa, having started going to these events only about four months prior.
That night, after attending the "Better Off Undead" rave at the Capitol Hill Arts Center, she found herself separated from her initial group of friends.
Stranded after the main event, Melissa, along with two other teenage girls she had befriended, was invited to an after-party at a nearby blue house on East Republican Street. It was a decision that would have devastating consequences. As the early morning hours wore on and the party began to wind down, Melissa and her new friend, 15-year-old Suzanne Thorne, were sitting on the front porch, possibly waiting for a ride home. It was then that they were approached by 28-year-old Kyle Aaron Huff.
Huff, who had also been at the after-party, had left unnoticed and returned to his truck, where he armed himself with a shotgun, a handgun, and a large amount of ammunition. He then walked back to the house and began his attack. Melissa Moore and Christopher Williamson were his first victims, shot on the front porch. The King County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that Melissa died from a shotgun wound to the chest and a gunshot to the head. Inside the house, Huff continued his rampage, methodically shooting and killing four more people and wounding two others before walking back outside.

Before the officer could fully command him to drop his weapon, Kyle Huff took his own life.
