In the early hours of October 19, 2024, the life of 25-year-old Breanna Lavona Tasha Simmons, a Black / African American female, was tragically cut short in Seattle's vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood. At approximately 1:30 a.m., amidst the weekend nightlife, gunshots echoed near the intersection of 11th Avenue and East Prospect Street. Breanna was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
Despite the immediate aid rendered by bystanders and the swift response of the Seattle Police and Fire Departments, her injuries proved fatal, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shock of Breanna’s violent death rippled through her community, leaving her family and friends grappling with an immense loss. Remembered as a dedicated and loving mother to her 4-year-old daughter, Breanna was a graduate of Kentlake High School. Those who knew her described her as a supportive friend who found joy in helping others, including cooking for teen moms and single women. Her mother, while seeking justice for her daughter, recalled Breanna as an "amazing person" who "didn't deserve what happened to her."
The tragedy was compounded the following day when a vigil held in Breanna's honor at the site of her death became another scene of violence. In a brazen act, multiple shooters opened fire on the gathering, injuring a 25-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man. Both victims were transported to Harborview Medical Center with serious but stable injuries. This second shooting only deepened the community's fear and outrage over the senseless gun violence.
As of now, the Seattle Police Department's Gun Violence Reduction Unit is actively investigating both the murder of Breanna Simmons and the subsequent shooting at her vigil. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with either incident, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward as a grieving family and a shaken community await answers and hope for justice for Breanna.
