In the summer of 1983, a young Caucasian woman named Kelly Marie Ware, 22 years old, vanished from Seattle, Washington. She was a vibrant individual whose life was tragically cut short, becoming one of the many victims of a notorious serial killer. The last time anyone heard from her was on July 18, 1983. Prior to this, she was last seen on July 17, 1983, at a bus stop located at 22nd Avenue East and East Madison Street.
Her disappearance cast a dark shadow over the community, leaving her family in a state of agonizing uncertainty.
For months, there was no news of Kelly's whereabouts. Then, on October 29, 1983, a grim discovery was made in a vacant lot in the 2500 block of South 192nd Street, an area south of Sea-Tac Airport. The remains found at the scene were identified as those of Kelly Marie Ware. Tragically, her body was located a mere 100 feet from the remains of another young woman, Constance Naon, who had also fallen victim to the same predator.
The investigation into Kelly's murder, along with numerous others in the Seattle area, spanned decades. For a long time, the identity of the killer remained a chilling mystery, a phantom who haunted the Pacific Northwest. The case eventually led investigators to Gary Leon Ridgway, who came to be known as the Green River Killer. Through advances in DNA technology, authorities were finally able to link Ridgway to several of the murders.
In a plea bargain to avoid the death penalty, Gary Ridgway confessed to a staggering number of murders, including that of Kelly Marie Ware. On November 5, 2003, he pleaded guilty to 48 counts of aggravated first-degree murder. Ridgway provided details about his crimes, admitting to picking up women, strangling them, and then disposing of their bodies in secluded areas. He received multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole, finally bringing a legal conclusion to the long and painful chapter of his reign of terror. The resolution of the case, while not erasing the pain of their loss, provided a measure of justice for Kelly Ware's family and the families of the many other victims.
