Patricia Michelle Barczak, a 19-year-old Caucasian female, had dreams of a future filled with the sweet aroma of baking. Having recently completed culinary school, she envisioned a life as a baker, crafting beautiful wedding cakes. However, her life had taken a different turn, and she found herself involved in sex work along Pacific Highway South in SeaTac, Washington. It was from this area, near the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, that she vanished on October 17, 1986.
For years, her disappearance remained a painful mystery for her family, a void filled with uncertainty and anguish.
The painful question of what happened to Patricia lingered for nearly seven years. A breakthrough in the case came on February 3, 1993, when a Department of Transportation survey crew made a grim discovery near Highway 18 in Auburn. They found a human skull, which dental records would later confirm belonged to Patricia Barczak. The location was chillingly familiar to investigators; the remains of two other victims of the notorious Green River Killer had been found nearby. Due to the condition of her remains, an exact cause of death could not be determined, but her case was officially classified as a homicide.
Initially, investigators did not officially link Patricia's death to the string of slayings attributed to the Green River Killer, though the circumstances bore a striking resemblance. Her mother, also named Patricia, publicly spoke of the "pure hell" of not knowing who had killed her daughter. The final, terrible answer to that question would not come until 2001. As part of a plea deal to avoid the death penalty, Gary Leon Ridgway, the Green River Killer, confessed to murdering Patricia Barczak. Ridgway, one of America's most prolific serial killers, was ultimately convicted of 49 murders, bringing a long-awaited, albeit tragic, resolution to the disappearance of the young woman who dreamed of being a baker.
