Debora May “Debbie” Abernathy, a 26-year-old white female, was last seen alive on September 5, 1983, in Seattle, Washington. Originally from Dallas, Texas, she had recently relocated to Seattle with her boyfriend and young son, seeking a fresh start. In the weeks leading up to her disappearance, Debbie had turned to sex work as a means of financial support.
She was last observed near Rainier Avenue, a location known at the time for its vulnerability to predatory violence against women, particularly those involved in sex work.
Debbie's remains were discovered months later, on March 31, 1984, in a wooded area east of Enumclaw, Washington, near Highway 410. Due to the condition of her remains, the exact cause of death could not be determined, but her death was classified as a homicide. She remained unidentified for several weeks until dental records confirmed her identity in May 1984. At the time of her disappearance and subsequent discovery, she was added to the list of suspected victims of the Green River Killer, a serial murderer targeting women in the Seattle area.
It wasn't until 2001 that a major breakthrough occurred. Gary Ridgway, later known as the Green River Killer, was arrested and eventually confessed to the murders of dozens of women, including that of 26-year-old white female Debbie Abernathy. Ridgway was convicted of her murder along with the murders of at least 48 other women, making him one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history. His victims were often young women, many of whom were sex workers or runaways, and his crimes spanned the 1980s and 1990s.
