In the late summer of 2021, the life of 20-year-old Zoey Martinez, a Latina transgender woman, was tragically cut short in Seattle, Washington. On September 1st, her body was discovered in an alley in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood by a person out for an early morning jog. The cause of death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds, ruling her death a homicide.
The investigation into her death revealed a troubling sequence of events that began the day before.
Martinez had arranged to meet with 23-year-old Jacaree Hardy in Maple Valley. She believed he had stolen $1,100 from her after her debit card went missing and had filed a police report about the fraud. Feeling uneasy about meeting him alone, Martinez had asked a friend to accompany her in a separate car. However, by the time her friend arrived, Hardy had already driven off with Martinez in his vehicle. Her friend attempted to follow but lost them after a brief chase. This would be the last time Martinez was seen alive by her loved ones.
Concerned for her safety, Martinez's friends and parents reported her missing. The search for her ended the following morning with the grim discovery in the alley. The Seattle Police Department quickly identified Jacaree Hardy as the prime suspect in her murder. For a month, Hardy remained at large, prompting Martinez's family to work with Crime Stoppers to offer a reward for information leading to his arrest.
On October 6, 2021, investigators from the Seattle Police Department, with the assistance of U.S. Marshals, located and arrested Hardy in Renton without incident. He was found hiding under a bed in an apartment. Hardy was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. During the investigation, police found Hardy's car, which contained blood on the passenger seat and spent shell casings. Surveillance footage from near the meeting point in Maple Valley reportedly captured muzzle flashes from inside a vehicle just two minutes after Martinez entered. Prosecutors set his bail at $5 million. Hardy pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the case proceeded to court.
