In the early morning hours of August 20, 2023, a scene of chaos and violence erupted at a hookah lounge in South Seattle, forever altering the lives of many. Among the victims was Nadia Kassa, a 30-year-old woman, who was enjoying a night out. The daughter of parents who had moved from the Tigray region of Ethiopia, Nadia was described by her family as a caring and generous person who was the glue that held her six sisters together. She was known to be the furthest person from any negativity or drama, dedicating her life to helping others.
Just after 4:00 a.m., gunfire broke out in the crowded Rainier Hookah Lounge, leading to a frantic scramble for safety. When police arrived at the establishment on Rainier Avenue South, they discovered a mass shooting had occurred. Two men, 22-year-old Jonathan Bishu and 32-year-old Trevis Bellard, were found deceased at the scene. Nadia Kassa was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Harborview Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries later that morning. The tragic event left a total of three people dead and six others injured.
In the aftermath, investigators recovered at least five guns from the scene, but no immediate arrests were made, and no suspects were publicly identified. The Seattle Police Department appealed to the public for information, while Nadia's family grappled with their immense loss, channeling their grief into positive action. They established a nonprofit organization called Nadia's Promise to continue her legacy of giving back to the community by feeding the homeless and are also working to build a women's clinic in Ethiopia. While the investigation continues and authorities have not yet publicly stated who fired the fatal shots, a step forward in the case occurred in late October 2024. A 26-year-old Kent man was indicted by the U.S. Attorney's Office and charged with illegally possessing firearms at the time of the deadly shooting.
