A summer evening at a popular food festival turned into a scene of tragedy on July 26, 2026, when 56-year-old Ashley Whitehead was fatally wounded in a shootout at the Bite of Seattle event at the Seattle Center. Whitehead, who had moved to Washington from Alabama a year prior to be closer to her family, was at the festival with her daughter and future son-in-law. Described by her family as a free spirit with a great sense of humor and a beautiful smile, she loved nature, arts and crafts, and her two daughters. The group was waiting in line for cotton candy when gunfire erupted. In the chaos that ensued, Whitehead was struck by a bullet in the pelvis. She was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, where she tragically died during surgery. Her daughter was able to exchange "I love you's" with her before she passed away.

The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a gang-related conflict. The Seattle Police Department, along with the FBI and ATF, determined that at least three shooters were involved in the exchange of gunfire. The incident resulted in two other fatalities and four additional injuries, including a two-year-old boy. The other deceased were identified as 44-year-old Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, another innocent bystander, and 19-year-old Junior Cee Niko Semo, who was identified as one of the shooters. Investigators recovered multiple firearms from the scene, including a ghost gun.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police arrested a 15-year-old suspect who was seen firing a handgun into a crowd. The teen was subsequently charged with first-degree assault and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. Prosecutors have since filed a motion to have the case transferred from juvenile to adult court. While one of the suspected shooters, Junior Cee Niko Semo, was killed at the scene, authorities believe at least one other shooter remains at large. The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement continues to search for the additional suspect or suspects and piece together the events that led to the deadly violence. The case has highlighted the tragic consequences of gang violence, claiming the lives of innocent community members like Ashley Whitehead and leaving a lasting impact on their families and the city of Seattle.
