In the early moments of a Wednesday, just after midnight on January 21, 2026, the life of 18-year-old Malik Moore was tragically cut short, marking the first homicide in Washington, D.C. for the year. A high school student from Northeast, D.C., Moore was inside a residence on the 1300 block of Varnum Street, Northeast, in the Michigan Park neighborhood when he was shot multiple times.
Metropolitan Police Department officers from the Fourth District responded to the scene at approximately
12:04 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Moore suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel quickly transported him to a local hospital. Despite all lifesaving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
