On a cold January evening in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the life of 19-year-old Jeomy Miguel Soto was cut short by gunfire. The fatal encounter took place on Thursday, January 22, 2026, behind a residence on the 500 block of West Washington Street. Police were dispatched to the scene around 9:16 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Soto suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead at 9:50 p.m. An autopsy conducted by the Lehigh County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Soto's death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and within 24 hours, a suspect was in custody. Yaniel Fermin, a 17-year-old from Allentown, was arrested and charged as an adult with criminal homicide in connection with Soto's death. Authorities stated that the shooting appeared to stem from a dispute over money related to the sale of THC vapes. A witness who was with Soto at the time of the incident told police they had arranged to meet with an individual nicknamed "Po" to collect money that was owed.
During the meeting, an argument and then a physical altercation reportedly erupted between the witness and the individual identified as Fermin. In the midst of the struggle, Fermin is alleged to have pulled out a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and fired at least two shots. Soto, who was standing nearby, was struck by the gunfire. The quick apprehension of Fermin was the result of a collaborative effort between the Allentown Police Department and the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force. In addition to the homicide charge, Fermin also faced charges of possession with intent to deliver controlled substances and possession of a firearm by a minor. He was subsequently held at the Lehigh County Jail without the possibility of bail.
