In what should have been a moment of relief after a terrifying home invasion, a Phoenix family was instead plunged into deeper tragedy on the night of January 26, 2026. Christian Diaz Rendon, a 36-year-old Latino man, was fatally shot not by the intruder he had bravely subdued, but by a police officer arriving at the scene. The chaos began when a man, later identified as 33-year-old Edgar Garcia, the son of the family's landlord, started shooting at the home near 75th Avenue and Lower Buckeye
Road. With nearly a dozen people inside, including young children, the family's sense of security was shattered.
Garcia allegedly fired up to 20 rounds into the residence before forcing his way inside through a sliding glass door. As family members scrambled for cover, Rendon and his uncle confronted the gunman. They managed to wrestle the firearm away from Garcia and pin him to the floor, successfully neutralizing the threat. It was Rendon himself who then called 911 for help, believing the worst was over. One of Rendon's stepsons had been shot in the ankle during the initial assault by the intruder.
When Phoenix police officers arrived, family members, including Rendon's wife, say they desperately tried to communicate that the situation was under control and that the gunman had been restrained. According to relatives, their pleas for officers not to shoot were ignored. An officer, positioned outside a doorway, fired his weapon, striking Rendon as he held Garcia down. The single shot proved fatal. Rendon was pronounced dead at the scene.
The aftermath of the shooting has left the family devastated and seeking answers and accountability. The Phoenix Police Chief later confirmed that the officer had shot the wrong person. The Arizona Department of Public Safety has taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Meanwhile, Edgar Garcia was taken into custody and now faces charges including aggravated assault, burglary, and murder. Under Arizona law, he can be charged with murder because a death occurred during the commission of the felonies he is accused of committing.
