In the evening hours of October 22, 2023, a life was tragically cut short in west Phoenix. Sixteen-year-old Daniel Angel Chavarria, a Hispanic male, was in the area of 57th Avenue and Hazelwood Street when violence erupted. Phoenix police officers received reports of a shooting and arrived at the scene around 7:20 p.m. to find the young man with multiple gunshot wounds.
Paramedics rushed Daniel to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead. Homicide detectives were called to the scene to begin the painstaking process of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting. The initial investigation revealed that Daniel was attempting to break up a fight when an unknown individual opened fire, striking him.
In the wake of the shooting, the Phoenix Police Department appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. Authorities urged anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them or to provide anonymous tips through Silent Witness. As of late 2023, no suspects had been publicly identified or taken into custody, and the investigation into Daniel's death remains ongoing. His family, left to grapple with their profound loss, has publicly mourned the young man who they described as the life of their family and have pleaded for the person responsible to come forward.
