A sense of protectiveness and a desire to do the right thing allegedly led to the shooting death of Spencer Germany, a 45-year-old man, in a Houston home. The incident, which has left his family devastated, unfolded in the early morning hours in the Third Ward. Germany was visiting a friend's mother when he reportedly witnessed a man, identified as Rogers McFarland, assaulting his own elderly mother.
According to family members, Germany intervened in the altercation, pulling McFarland
off the woman. A physical confrontation ensued as Germany sought to stop the attack. Following this intervention, McFarland is said to have left the residence. However, the situation took a fatal turn a few hours later when McFarland allegedly returned to the home, this time armed with a gun. He is accused of opening fire on Germany, inflicting multiple gunshot wounds that proved to be fatal.
Houston police officers were dispatched to the home on Anita Street shortly after midnight, where they discovered Germany suffering from the gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. In the wake of the shooting, McFarland reportedly fled but was later apprehended by law enforcement after his mother disclosed his whereabouts to the police.
McFarland has since been arrested and charged with murder. He is being held in the Harris County Jail on a $750,000 bond. The decision to grant bond has been met with outrage and sorrow by Germany's family, who have expressed their intention to be present at all of McFarland's court proceedings.
