On the afternoon of June 14, 2013, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Buffalo neighborhood, leaving a young man's life extinguished. Michael Payne, a 29-year-old Black male from the nearby suburb of Cheektowaga, was shot multiple times at the intersection of Northland and Rickert avenues on the city's east side.
