On the evening of January 2, 2026, a trip to the grocery store for a barbecue turned into a fatal act of heroism for 22-year-old Joseph Macias, a Hispanic male from Bakersfield, California. Macias was at the Foods Co. on White Lane just before 9:30 p.m. when he witnessed two individuals robbing an older man, attempting to snatch his chain. Without hesitation, Macias intervened to help the victim.
