On March 17, 2023, at approximately 2:00 a.m., deputies responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex in the 7000 block of Auburn Street in northeast Bakersfield, California. Upon arrival, they discovered 42-year-old Jose Antonio Contreras, a resident of Palmdale, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Tragically, Contreras was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, authorities arrested 36-year-old Bakersfield resident Valeria Galvez on suspicion of murder. She was taken into custody as part of the preliminary investigation conducted by the Bakersfield Police Department.
However, on March 21, 2023, the Kern County District Attorney's Office requested further investigation into the case before proceeding with formal charges. As a result, no charges were filed against Galvez at that time, and she was expected to be released from custody pending the outcome of the additional investigation.
As of now, there have been no public updates regarding any subsequent arrests or identification of additional suspects related to the death of Jose Antonio Contreras. The case remains under investigation by local law enforcement agencies.
